azalea landscape search . . . under construction
This page is not yet connected to a database, so it will not retrieve any azalea information. When you click the Search button at the end, it instead sends your data as an e-mail to the website committee, to let them know the page is being tested.
We are showing the page to let you critique the characteristics and menu entries. They are easiest to judge by using the page to describe azaleas you might be interested in finding.
You can also see how the information might be displayed (mockup, not your search results) at azalea display.
To share your experiences, and thus influence the design of this page, send an email to the website committee.
landscape search
This search finds azaleas to meet specific needs in your landscape. Choose an entry from one or more of these menus to describe your needs. You can see more information about each menu, below.
Remember less is more -- the fewer entries you choose, the more results you will find, and vice versa.
menu details
bloom color - the garden effect, which is the overall flower color as viewed from a distance, such as 20 feet away
bloom time - relative bloom times. The actual dates vary due to latitude. In middle latitudes of the United States such as the Washington DC area, the periods mean:
- very early = before March 15
- early = between March 15 and April 15
- early midseason = between April 15 and May 1
- midseason = between May 1 and May 15
- late midseason = between May 15 and June 1
- late = between June 1 and July 1
- very late = after July 1
cold zone-min (°F) - the coldest average winter temperature for your area. The search will include plants that are known to survive that temperature and warmer temperatures.
plant height (feet) - a range of heights of the plant in about 10 years, in feet. The "10 year height" is usually the height given in books and on plant labels. The search will include plants in the range you chose.
plant shape - the overall shape of the plant under normal growing conditions
plant group/species - the name of the species or hybrid group of the azaleas you are interested in, such as Kurume
plant type - whether it is deciduous (drops its leaves in the fall), evergreen (really "persistent leaved", with leaves growing in the spring and in the summer, and usually keeping them more than one year), or an azaleodendron (crosses between azaleas and rhododendrons - there are very few of these)
database - which database(s) to search. The standard database contains azaleas whose data have been reviewed and are known to be as correct as possible. The pending database contains azaleas which have been entered since the last review.
missing data - we don't know all the characteristics of all the azaleas. Choose include if no data to show azaleas with matches for some of your menu entries, even if they are empty for some of the other ones. Choose exclude if no data to insist on exact matches for all of your menu entries, ie, don't show azaleas with unknown entries for any of the characteristics you are interested in.
