This index1 shows accepted2 azalea names and their published synonyms and spelling variants. The names are listed in alphabetic sequence, ignoring any spaces or punctuation. Each name is followed by its type, hybrid group, information source and links to any pictures.
This index is part of an ongoing project by the Azalea Society of America to provide comprehensive and correct azalea information online. Explore the links on the left to learn more about the Azalea Society and these amazingly beautiful and diverse woody shrubs.
__________ 1 This interim version of March 2005 is not yet rigorously edited and is known to be missing many names beginning with L to Z. Email our webmaster with your thoughts on its style, utility, and ways to improve it. 2 An " accepted" or "valid" plant name must have been published in a dated publication and follow other rules:
- for species, the rules are specified by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), summarized here, with a much longer tutorial here; and
- for cultivars, the rules are specified by the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), known as the "Cultivated Plant Code", summarized here.
The complete index has many pages. Each page starts with a table of links to its other pages, where each link shows the first three letters of the first and last name on that page. To find a particular plant:
- first get on the correct page by clicking the appropriate link (or by using the search box on the left); and
- then scroll down to your plant, or use your browser find feature to get there.
When you type a name in the search box or your browser find, you may ignore capitalization and omit surrounding quotes, but you must include possessive quotes, periods, spaces and hyphens.
- lower case italics : the named plant is a species, e.g., vaseyi; the name shown is shorthand for the correct and complete name, e.g., vaseyi is shorthand for Rhododendron vaseyi A. Gray (where A. Gray is the name of the person who named it)
- 'Initial Capitals and Surrounding Quotes' : the named plant is a cultivar, e.g., 'Ben Morrison' is shorthand for Rhododendron Ben Morrison
- bold without quotes : a breeder number used as the accepted plant name, e.g., 46G, or a common name, e.g., Smooth Azalea
- plain text without quotes : the name is a synonym, a spelling variant, a spelling error, or a breeder number for a named azalea, e.g., 'Corry' (T21-9)
- Japanese names : are hyphenated and capitalized following usage in the International Rhododendron Register and Checklist (IRRC), e.g., 'Beni-kirishima', rather than 'Benikirishima' or 'Beni Kirishima'; all published versions are shown, with the IRRC version treated as the accepted name
- spaces : are used between words and after any period, e.g., 'B. Y. Morrison'
- diacritical marks : are not shown, e.g., 'Princesse Frédérique' is shown as 'Princesse Frederique'
- subscripts1 : distinguish different plants with the same name and in the same hybrid group, e.g., 'Hakutsuru'1 and 'Hakutsuru'2 (both are Satsuki)
- name sequence : is as if the names had no spaces or punctuation, to approximate human ordering, e.g., 'Buzzard', 'B. Y. M.', 'B. Y. Morrison', 'Byron Mayo'
- accepted names, synonyms, spelling variants and errors :
- bold text : is used for accepted names, followed by any synonyms, spelling variants and errors in plain text enclosed in parentheses, e.g., 'Balsaminiflorum' ('Balsaeminiflorum', 'Balsaeminiflora', 'Rosaeflora', 'Komanyo Satsuki')
- see : the name to the left is a synonym, spelling variant or spelling error, followed by "see" and a link to its accepted name, e.g., 'Balsaminaeflorum'see'Balsaminiflorum'
(typically, the source shown is the one containing the synonym, spelling variant or spelling error)
- (sp?) : a name published as having questionable spelling is followed by "(sp?)", e.g., 'Fujibotan' (sp?)
- ? : a name followed by a ? indicates something is questionable about the name or hybrid group, e.g., 'Comtesse de Flandre' ('Comitessa Flandriae') ? (it is not clear which is the correct name and which is the synonym) Hartnellii' = 'Hartwellianum' ? (these are probably different names for the same plant) 'Hano-komachi'* see'Hane-komachi' ? ('Hano-komachi' is probably an error for 'Hane-komachi', but may be an accepted synonym) 'Akatsuki no Zao' : see'Gunbo Nishiki' ? ('Akatsuki no Zao' may not be an accepted synonym for 'Gunbo Nishiki') 'Madame de la Galliserie'* : = 'Madame Legalissier'* ? (one of these names is probably an error for the other)
- when azaleas were considered to be in the genus Azalea (feminine), their Latin name endings were feminine, e.g. 'Alba', and they are now more correctly neuter, e.g. 'Album', to match the gender of genus Rhododendron (neuter); both forms are shown if published, with the neuter form shown as the accepted name
- similar plants, same plants :
- like : names of similar plants are followed by like and a link to the name of the similar plant, e.g., 'Charles de Buck'like'Duc de Nassau'
- = : different names for plants which may be the same plant are followed by an = and a link to the other name, e.g., 'Hartnellii' = 'Hartwellianum' ?
- [ev]er[g]reen - the plant holds some of its leaves during the winter
- [dec]iduous - the plant drops all its leaves during the winter
- [az]aleo[d]endron - the plant is a hybrid of an azalea and a rhododendron
- [unk]nown - the plant is an azalea, with no other published information about its type or hybrid group
picture codes (what sort of picture you will see by clicking the link)
- [b]loom - a close-up of the front of the flower
- [t]ube - a close-up of the side of the flower, with the tube,
flare, calyx, etc.
- [s]pray - the flower arrangement on the stem
- [f]oliage - a close-up of the shape and arrangement of the leaves
- [p]lant - the plant habit and size, usually by itself
- [l]andscape - the plant in the distance, usually among others
- [o]ther - a picture showing other aspects of the plant
Picture colors only approximate the actual flower colors due to differences in lighting, and in camera and monitor settings. For the best color, adjust your monitor to see a difference between each of these 16 shades of gray:

The pictures are on a separate picture website, and they open in a new browser window. While you are there, you can explore its next, previous, or various ...gallery links to see if there are more pictures of the plant or other plants of interest (pictures of the same plant are usually in the same sequence as the picture codes, above)
Close the window to return to the plant index page - either click the window close box/button, type Control+W (Windows) or Apple+W (Macintosh), or choose Close from the File menu.
sources (where this information was found . . . incomplete)
Information : The abbreviated sources of information are shown in full below. When a plant name is mentioned in multiple sources, the source shown is typically the earliest source found, the source with the most data, or the most authoritative source. If different sources have different information, preference is given to the International Rhododendron Register and Checklist.
Plant : If the information source is a recent nursery catalog, that nursery may be able to supply that plant.
Picture : The picture of a plant typically shows who took the picture, and any other information known about it, such as where and when it was taken.

The hybrid group names are generally those used in Galle and the International Rhododendron Register and Checklist. In some cases they instead show the plant is a species azalea selection, or (when the hybrid group is not known) show the name of either the registrant, namer, raiser or hybridizer, in that order.
Knowing its hybrid group may give some general information about a plant, since many (but not all) plants in the same hybrid group may have similar characteristics such as cold-hardiness or plant habit. Some information about these groups is:
