background
The 'Holly Springs Hybrids' are my results after 13 years of hybridizing effort designed to produce [evergreen] azaleas with larger blooms, dwarf to mid-size growth habit and increased cold hardiness. With the 79 cultivars which are being introduced in 1990, a total of 84 varieties have now been introduced. These were selected after testing, from approximately 41,000 seedlings which were produced from 451 crosses. Approximately 14,000 seedling remain under evaluation. Unfortunately, some listed varieties will not be available for purchase in 1990 due to the advance orders placed last Spring. However; it was necessary to make a complete listing, so as to provide plant descriptions for those purchasers.

I intend to register all of the plants ultimately, and as many as possible will be accomplished during 1990. For those who previously purchased plants under a hybridizing number, that number is included in the plant description, to enable determination of the cultivar names. Approximately 60 cultivars, which are under evaluation for possible introduction during 1991 or 1992, are offered under their propagation number. In the case of plant names, all were selected based upon specific aspects of the plant or for individuals who have had a significant impact upon my life or hybridizing program. I have listed some data with plant descriptions and will include complete information when the program is terminated in approximately 6 years. The name for the hybrid group - "Holly Springs" - is taken from a small but charming antebellum, Northern Mississippi town near The University of Mississippi, where I attended college. Holly Springs was also where I met William Faulkner, we had the distinction of sharing the same "bootlegger".
