3’ x 3’ (1 ½’ x 1 ½’ in 5 years), dense. Buds vivid reddish-purple (78A) with white along petal centers. Flowers strong reddish-purple (78B) at the edge of each lobe, shading to white in the center of corolla, with slight spotted blotch of moderate purplish-red (58A) on dorsal lobes. Flower outside strong reddish-purple (78B) with white along petal centers. Semidouble with 13 ruffled edged lobes, saucer-shaped, 2-3 per head, 2 ¾” x 1 ½”. Blooms heavily in midseason; early May in Vienna, VA. Calyx light yellow-green (145D), 0.4” long. Leaves glossy, moderate olive green (146A) above. Leaf shape: elliptic, broadly acute, cuneate base, flat, 1.8” x 0.8” wide. Plant and bud hardy to 0°F; zone 7. Name was selected through NIH charity auction; high bidder got to select the name.
