May White Azalea
Low to medium height with a clump habit; not stoloniferous. Flowers snowy-white with a prominent yellow blotch, 0.8-1.5” wide. Blooms midseason; mid May in native regions, with the leaves fully expanded. Extremely fragrant, distinct, strong, and fresh. Prefers near neutral soils. Found in South Carolina in 13 counties of the piedmont and coastal plain. Discovered ~ 1999 by highway engineer, Charles Eastman, who noticed the first of the two populations when he was working on a new right-of-way for Highway 20.
