5’ -25 F Roseshell Azalea, R. roseum
5’ tall, numerous spreading branches. Flowers pale pink to bright rose-pink with a dark red blotch. Strong cinnamon-clove spicy scent. Tubular-funnel shape, to 1 ½” wide, in trusses of 5-9. Blooms, midseason. Leaves bright green. Leaf shape: obovate or oblong-obovate, slightly hairy above, densely covered below with grey or bluish-green hairs, medium in size. Somewhat more tolerant of neutral or slightly alkaline soils than other Azaleas. It is one of the most cold hardy of the native Azaleas, and it can be expected to do especially well in cold climates. Hardy to -25 F; Zone 4-7. Native from southwestern Quebec down through the Appalachians to Virginia. First mentioned in 1787.
