Low Spreading zone 7 ‘Asahi Sakigake’ x ‘Margaret Douglas’ ‘Dorothy Clark’
Low, spreading habit. Buds and flowers strong red (53D), shading to a very pale center, the width of which varies among blooms. Blotch is Strong Red (53B) on dorsal lobe and portions of adjacent lobes. Flower outside has near white midribs. Single, funnel-shaped with 5 rounded, overlapping, slightly wavy-edged lobes, 3 ¾-4” wide x 2 ¼” long, 2 per cluster. Blooms midseason (early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Strong Yellow-Green (143C), ½” long. Leaves Moderate Olive Green (137A) in spring. Leaf shape elliptic with a cuneate base and an acuminate tip, upcurved edges, up to 2” long x 3/4” wide. Zone 7. Hardy to 0 F, at least. Cross: RBS #20-94-1, unnamed Stewart hybrid = [‘Asahi Sakigake’, Belgian Indian x ‘Margaret Douglas’, Back Acres’] x Dorothy Clark, Harris. Selection number: Selection number: RBS 68. Breeder’s code: #28-97-1. Named for Mary Rutley, an ASA Director and a very active member of the Brookside Gardens Chapter, serving as Vice President, Membership Chair, and on many national convention committees. Mary joined the ASA in 1978. She was a frequent volunteer at The National Arboretum and Brookside Gardens. For her many contribution, Mary was awarded the Frederic P. Lee Commendation in 1989.
