Hybridizer: Kelly Strickland
Frank Kelly Strickland was born in Telogia, Fla., and his family moved to Marianna, Fla., while he was still a little boy. He attended high school in Marianna and graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in Management in 1953. After serving two years in the Army during the Korean War, he returned to Tallahassee, where he was employed by the Florida Department of Transportation. He served in a number positions, including executive secretary of the Florida State Road Board. He retired in 1985 from the position of director of purchasing for the Department of Transportation. He had always been an avid hunter and fisherman, but after his retirement he was more interested in observing wildlife and engaging in his new hobby, hybridizing and raising native azaleas. He traveled all over the Southeast to find plants that he wanted to work with. He also enjoyed spending time with his family at their cabin in Franklin, NC.
