2 ½’ tall x 3’ wide with an intermediate habit. Flowers variable: 1) white with Strong Reddish-Purple (N78A) lobes, sectors, stripes, steaks, dashes; 2) Light Purple (77D) with Strong Reddish-Purple (N78A) stripes, and line, and irregular white margins; 3) Strong Reddish-Purple (N78A) selfs. Blotch on upper three lobes of: 1) Strong Yellow-Green (144B) on the white fields; 2) prominent Strong Purplish-Red (64A) on the darker fields. Single, some with petaloid stamens, funnel-shaped, oval wavy-edges lobes with the top three overlapping, 4” wide x 2 ½” long, 3-4 per cluster. Blooms early midseason (early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Strong Yellow-Green (143C), ¾” long. Foliage Strong Yellow-Green (darker than 144A), semiglossy. Leaves elliptic with a cuneate base and acuminate tip, concave, up to 2 ¾” long x 1” wide. Zone 7; hardy to 0°F, at least. ‘Desiree’ (Shamarello) x CB #1 (unnamed azalea grown by Cliff Brown). Selection number: RBS 29. Breeder Code: #8-90-13. Named for Dr. Robert (Bob) W. Hobbs to honor his longtime service to the ASA as Editor of The Azalean. To acknowledge this endeavor, he received both the ASA Exceptional Service Award and the Brookside Chapter’s Frederic P. Lee Award. Bob served as the ASA President from 1988-1992 and filled many roles in the Ben Morrison Chapter, who awarded him the Hobbs Award of Merit.
