3’ tall x 3 ½’ with an intermediate growth habit. Flowers variable: 1) white with Strong Reddish-Purple (N78A, N78B, and lighter) sectors, stripes, lines and dots; 2) palest reddish-purple with Strong Reddish-Purple (N78A, N78B, and lighter) and sectors, stripes, lines; 3) Strong Reddish-Purple (N78B) selfs, occasionally with white stripes; white selfs 4). Single, some with petaloid stamens, funnel-shaped, with wavy edges, 3” wide x 2” long, 2-3 per cluster. Blooms early midseason (late April to early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Strong Yellow-Green (144B), ½” long. Foliage matte Strong Yellow-Green (144A). Leaves elliptic with an acuminate tip and cuneate base, up to 2 ¼” long x 7/8” wide. Zone 7, hardy to 0 F, at least. Selection #: RBS 3. Breeder Code: #11-94-02. RBS #8-90-07 x ‘Florence Waldman’ (Roslyn). Named for James (Jim) Brant primarily for his leadership role in the restoration of Hooper Bald which led to the recovery of many outstanding forms of R. calendulaceum. Jim received the Regional Forester’s Award in 2017 and the ASA’s Distinguished Service Award in 2018 for this project.
