| 2’ tall x 2 ¼’ wide with an intermediate habit. Flowers have many shades of Deep Pink (52C and lighter) to almost white with irregular white margins, some with white stripes; rare Deep Pink (52B) self. Large, prominent blotch of Moderate Purplish-Red (59C). Single, funnel-shaped, 5 rounded overlapping lobes with wavy edges, 3 ¼” wide x 1 7/8” long, 2-3 per cluster. Blooms midseason (mid May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Greyish Olive-Green (138B), 3/8” long. Foliage a matte Moderate Olive-Green (137A). Leaf shape: elliptic, cuneate base, acuminate tip, flat edges, concave (side-to-side), downturned (base-to-tip), up to 2” long x 1” wide. Zone 7; hardy to 0 F, at least. Selection number: RBS 8A. Breeder Code: #10-1994-1. = (RBS 8-1990-7 [Stewart unnamed selection] x ‘Midnight Flare’ [Harris]). Named for Robert Thau who contributed to the ASA in many capacities. At the national level he served as a Director and the Membership Chair. His recruitment efforts resulted in the creation of a new chapter – the Texas Forest Country Chapter. Robert was highly instrumental in obtaining Azalea City status for Jasper, Texas, and very involved with its beautification projects. He was an avid collector and the Legacy Lead for several hybrid groups. He shared his garden, his plants, and his knowledge with many, and authored articles for The Azalean. For his many efforts, Robert was given the Distinguished Service Award in 2020. | |||||
