4 1/2’ tall x 4 1/2’ wide with an open habit. Flowers Strong Red (46B) with a prominent darker blotch (53A). Single, funnel-shaped with 5-6 oval-rounded lobes and smooth edges, 2 3/4” wide x 2” long, 1-3 per cluster. Blooms early-midseason (late April to early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Strong Yellow-Green (143B), 3/8” long. Foliage Strong Yellow-Green (143A), semiglossy. Leaf shape: elliptic with a cuneate base and broadly acute tip, slightly concave (side-to-side), downcurved (base-to-tip), up to 1 3/4” long x 3/4” wide. Zone 7. Cross: ‘Midnight Flare’, Harris x ‘Red Slippers’ Back Acres, Selection number: RBS 188. Breeder code: #32-97-1. Named for James (Jim) O. Thornton in recognition of his contributions to The Azalea Society. He served as President (1997-1999), helped to charter the Oconee Chapter and played an active role there, wrote many articles for The Azalean, made presentations to various groups, and helped to plan two ASA Conventions. Jim spearheaded the establishment of the ASA Research Committee and served as its first chair. For all of his efforts, Jim was awarded the ASA Distinguished Service Award in 2013. |
