Flowers variable tonal bicolor: 1) Strong Purplish-Red (54A) with a creamy-white center, with a few Strong Red (51A) sectors, stripes, lines and darker Strong Purplish-Red (67A) blotch; 2) Strong Red (50A) with a creamy-white center and a darker Strong -Red (53B) blotch. Single, funnel-shaped with oval-rounded lobes and wavy edges, 3” wide x 2” long, 2 per cluster. Blooms early-midseason (early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Moderate Olive-Green (137A), 5/16” long. Foliage Strong Yellow-Green (143A), semiglossy. Leaf shape: elliptic with a cuneate base and acuminate tip, up to 2” long x 1” wide. Zone 7. Cross: ‘Asahi Sakigake’, Belgian Indian x ‘Refrain’, Glenn Dale. Selection number: RBS 181. Breeder code: #14-97-1. Named for Charles R. Andrews III to acknowledge his many roles in The Azalea Society. He served as President from 2021-2025, and on the Editorial Board of The Azalean. He has long had a passion for deciduous azaleas, has led many tours through their native habitats, has contributed numerous articles to The Azalean, and has presented talks on the subject. Charlie was co-chair of the 2023 ASA Convention in Atlanta, GA. |
