4’ x 5’, upright. Deep salmon-red (RHS 39B) with irregular white margins and purplish-red blotch. Margins are not pronounced until the plant matures. Single, 2-3 per cluster; 2 1/2-3”. Blooms early to mid May. Hardy to -5 F. Possibly (‘Vittata Fortunei’ x ‘Louise’) x ‘Adzuma no Hana’, or it may be a numbered Belgian-Glenn Dale Hybrid. Named in honor of a great horticulturist. (IRRC) open funnel-shaped, 54 x 70mm, with 5 slightly wavy-edged lobes, deep yellowish pink (39B) speckled with deep red (185A) on dorsal lobe and parts of adjacent lobes, with an irregular white margin on all lobes; stamens 10, curved, unequal. Calyx 5-lobed, 8mm long, green, hairy. Spring lvs elliptic, 44 x 25mm, flat, acute at apex, cuneate at base, dull mid green above, with discrete, colorless hairs above and below; petioles hairy. Shrub 0.8 x 1.5m in c15 years. Mid May. |
