1 ¼’ x 2’ wide, rounded, well-branched habit. Flowers vivid reddish-purple (RHS 75B) with strong purplish-red (RHS 67A) throat and spotting on the dorsal lobe. Calyx vivid reddish-purple (RHS 74B); 1”. Widely funnel-shaped single with 5 lobes and frilly edges, 2 ½” x 1 ¾” long. Blooms abundantly during mid April in Indiana. Leaves matte dark green, narrowly obovate, hairy. Hardy to -15 F, at least; Zones 5-8. ‘Purple Splendor’ x ‘Vuyk’s Scarlet’.
